The Relief of Localizing Symptoms at Lenten Rehab

If you read this blog regularly you know that I have been suggesting we see Lent as a really good rehabilitation center for our souls – one with the best doctor in existence. Sin is like a sickness that causes disharmony and pain in our souls, which can spread to those around us. Localizing symptoms means examining our consciences as honestly as possible and allowing ourselves to feel remorse for any sinfulness we find. Feeling this remorse can be painful and yet simultaneously a relief. For example, oftentimes when people explore potential symptoms of poor health with a doctor, they realize they were in pain for a long time before that pain came to the forefront of consciousness. Pain frequently develops gradually, and its signal can stay like a distant bell for a long time. Better understanding of the disharmony and pain in our souls can be a relief to the extent that it enables us to seek treatment. The healing may also be gradual, but at least it can provide the encouragement that comes from believing we are moving in the right direction. Now at the midpoint of Week Three of the season, let us stay strong and stick to our programs here at Lenten Spiritual Rehab!
