November 28, 2017 – Tuesday in the 34th and last week of the Church year Saint for the day: James-of-the-marche – 1394 – November28, 1476 Scripture Readings for today’Liturgy: Daniel 2:31-45 – Response Psalm: -Daniel 3:57 … 61 – Luke 21:5-11“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky.” (Today’s Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 21:11) I’m sure many of the “doomsday preachers” will have a field day with today’s Holy Gospel as they try to match it up to events that are happening all around the world. Many of the TV channels that I like to watch are filled with programs that try to scare us into thinking that these disasters of nature – along with sightings of ‘Big Foot’ and extraterrestrial visitations – are clear signs that we are in the end times. “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse” photo found at desdemonadespair.net Yet today’s Holy Gospel precedes the above quote with Jesus also saying, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, … Do not follow them!” In today’s first Scripture from the Book of Daniel the king’s dream is interpreted and we can see that all earthly kingdoms – which are made of various and different segments – will not last. The image of them being made up of all different natural elements that would seem to be impenetrable eventually fall apart as dust on the ground. Two things come to mind: “Here we have no lasting city” (Hebrews 13:14) along with the words of Jesus that we’ve been hearing all along, “The Kingdom of God is among (or within) you!” (Luke 17:21)) Isn’t it funny that people will so easily land on the most outlandish parts of the Holy Scripture while at the same time not hearing the straight forward words of Jesus which tell us not to run after the spectacular but, rather, to realize that the most important part of The Kingdom is right in your midst. Yet so many of us think we have to go out there – somewhere – to find God and in the process we trample over the widows and orphans who really are our ticket to happiness. “I tell you, when you have done it to the least of these little ones you have done it (maybe even missed) it for me.” (Matthew 25:40) We’ll get lots more of this theme in this last week of the Church Year so sit up and take notice! Amen!
